For the first time at an EVO tournament series, security was called in on a top player during the Melee awards ceremony. Joseph “Mang0” Marquez was detained by Mandalay Bay security guards after screaming “IT’S MINE” and attempting to wrestle the 1st place trophy from William “Leffen” Hjelte’s hands.
Officials are still questioning the motive behind the aggressive assault from the Falco main belonging to Cloud9.
“We don’t know why he did it, but we can look at the facts. This is a player who hasn’t won a major in 2018. We have to guess that as this player goes longer and longer without a tournament win, these attacks will become more frequent and more violent,” said Mikail Bill, a head security officer.
Leffen was not harmed in the incident, and his trophy was returned after Marquez sprinted nearly 100 yards from the main stage before being grabbed by security.
Evo’s head tournament organizer Joey “MrWizard” Cuellar chimed into the drama on his personal Twitter:
Congrats to Leffen from everyone at the Turnip team. Also congrats to the EVO team for another successful year. You can follow us on Twitter to get updated on new articles here.
